Predicting the Kings’ record for the 2024-25 NBA season

The Sacramento Kings have reshuffled their roster this offseason, putting together a star trio of De’Aaron Fox, Domantas Sabonis and the newly added DeMar DeRozan. Outside of the big three, the Kings have re-signed reigning Sixth Man of the Year runner-up Malik Monk, and fans are excited about the expected improvements from rising stars Keon Ellis and Keegan Murray.

With a new-look roster, the Kings have greater expectations than at any time in the last two decades. Another missed postseason would send the fan base into an uproar, but with this talented starting five, they can’t fail, right?

Sacramento’s 2024-25 regular season begins Thursday against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Here’s our prediction for how the Kings will finish the season:

The Kings haven’t had more than 50 wins since the 2004-05 season, and while it would be fitting to break the losing streak after exactly 20 years, it will still take a huge climb to get to that point.

Since arriving in Sacramento, Mike Brown has won 48 and 46 games, respectively, so approaching the 50-win mark certainly isn’t out of the question.

Last season, a 49-win season would have been the same as the sixth-best team in the West, but just two games ahead of the fourth seed. Ideally, the Kings would finish in the top four in the West again, but that’s much easier said than done.

If the Kings want to get to the 50-54 win margin, they will need to avoid the numerous putrid losses to inferior teams they suffered last season. Not only does Sacramento need to address the small losses, but it also has some holes in its system that will need to be addressed as the season progresses.

A 49-win season would be the franchise’s best in two decades, but the most important aspect of the season will be a return to the playoffs.
