Leaked Pokémon starter is “iconic,” fans say

Recently Game Freak was hacked. This in turn has flooded the internet with Pokémon leaks. This includes leaks about upcoming Pokemon games like Pokemon Legends: ZA and Gen 10. This also includes leaks about yesterday’s Pokemon games. Overall, this is one of the biggest leaks in gaming history, which is reinforced by the fact that Game Freak, The Pokemon Company and Nintendo have always been very reserved and secretive when it comes to Pokemon and the development behind it. However, the curtain was pulled back.

One leak in particular that caught the attention of Pokemon fans involves Pokemon Ruby, Pokemon Sapphire and Pokemon Emerald. More specifically, one of the many Gen 3 leaks revealed that there was once a Rabbit Pokémon named Warabbit that was intended to serve as a water representation as one of the three starter Pokémon. We don’t know when this plan was abandoned and the Pokémon replaced with Mudkip, but apparently this happened at some point, but not before Warabbit was developed for the game.

As you might expect, many Pokémon fans were devastated to learn that the Water Floating Water Bunny was being scrapped. However, Mudkip is one of the most popular starters of all time, so it seems Game Freak ultimately made the right decision. However, some Pokemon fans on Reddit are dreaming of a parallel universe where this replacement never happened.

“I love Mudkip, I really do. But how this guy didn’t make it into the final product, at least because it’s his own thing, is crazy to me,” writes one Pokémon fan. “Bro was discovered four days ago and has already become an icon,” read another comment.

Those who have been paying attention to the leaks will know that a ton of scrapped Pokemon have been leaked, but none have garnered the attention that Warabbit has. Whether this is because Warabbit was a starter or simply because fans like the design so much is hard to say.
