Applications are open for Cherokee elders to receive Christmas gifts

The Cherokee Nation is now accepting applications for the Elder Angel Project.

Eligible Cherokee elders who apply may receive Christmas gifts.

“Cherokee elders are our wisdom keepers, helping to preserve our shared history. It is important that we continually honor and value our elders. This program is just a small way for us to show that, but I know these gifts will be a blessing to so many,” said Bryan Warner, acting chief of the Cherokee Nation.

To be eligible, elders must meet the following guidelines.

  • Must be at least 60 years old.
  • Must be a citizen of the Cherokee Nation.
  • Live on the Cherokee Nation Reservation.
  • Provide proof of income.

Applications, which can be submitted to any Cherokee Nation Human Services office, must be submitted by November 1st.

“The Elder Angel Tree is an important project within Human Services because it is another opportunity for us to connect with our older Cherokee citizens,” said Jennifer Kirby, Executive Director of Cherokee Nation Human Services. “We can check in with them as we receive the applications, distribute the gifts and see their grateful reactions to the attention of others. It is our pleasure to be a part of giving to those who have given so much to others throughout their lives. Every year we look forward to getting into the holiday spirit with our Cherokee elders.”
