Anthony Edwards says he’ll give football a try if he wins an NBA title

Long before he found fame as an NBA star with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Anthony Edwards dominated the football field. In fact, as a youngster at Pop Warner, Edwards was so good that he drew comparisons to a young Michael Vick.

Now he seems open to the idea of taking another shot at the gridiron.

In a video released by ESPN announcing an upcoming story, Edwards said: “Football players can’t go play basketball. Absolutely not. I told my friends: ‘If I win a ring in the next three to four years, I will do it.’ “I’m going to play soccer.”

Edwards, known for his strong trash-talking skills, has made similar boasts in the past.

Last November, he said, “I think I could be the first” to move from the NBA to the NFL. And in 2021, he talked about his ability to compete in any sport.

Edwards did not play high school football as he had since switched to basketball.

In May, FOX Sports’ Melissa Rohlin revealed that Edwards switched from football to basketball at least in part because of the competitive 1-on-1 games he had with his brother.

Rohlin wrote:

Antony (known as Bubba) helped him focus on basketball because of its extremely competitive one-on-one games. If Anthony lost, he would lose it.

“He would start fighting,” Bubba said. “Punches were thrown.”

Anthony decided to focus on basketball, especially to beat his brother.

“I thought, forget football,” Edwards told FOX Sports. “I want to be like Bub.”

Edwards ultimately chose to play college basketball at Georgia, where he averaged 19.1 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists during the 2019–20 season. He then entered the NBA draft, where the T-Wolves selected him No. 1 overall.
