United States F1 GP live updates: Latest news from today’s Grand Prix with Lando Norris on pole

With only six Grands Prix remaining this season – and two more Sprints – it’s understandable if you’re wondering when things might be decided and how that would happen.

Max Verstappen leads now Lando Norris in the drivers’ standings by 54 points ahead of today’s Grand Prix. That’s more than two race wins (25 points) plus a bonus point for the fastest lap (1 point) if Verstappen doesn’t make it into the top 10.

Six GP wins, two sprint race wins and six fastest laps mean there are 172 points left for each driver – underlining how far we are from a defining moment.

Due to Norris’ deficit before the weekend in Austin (52 points), he had to overtake Verstappen by around nine points per race weekend in order to catch him at the finish in Abu Dhabi.

For comparison: the difference between first and third place in a Grand Prix is 10 points.

Despite Norris’ great recent form, he still fell short of this points percentage compared to Verstappen – even with the relatively smaller sample size.

And of course he has a two-point loss to Verstappen after Saturday’s sprint in Austin.
