“Gladiator 2” or “Gladiator II” will hit theaters in November for global audiences, but early reports suggest Ridley Scott’s epic saga could star at next year’s Oscars.

According to a report from Variety, “Gladiator 2” has received overwhelmingly positive responses so far from audiences and voters at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) and Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG).

There was a feeling that director Scott, a three-time Oscar nominee for Best Director, might become the frontrunner for Gladiator 2 this time around. Gladiator II stars Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, Connie Nielsen, Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger in key roles. Aside from the Best Picture and Best Director segments, Paul Mescal and Denzel Washington can also receive nominations in their respective categories for next year’s Academy Awards, according to Variety’s report.

At the 2001 Academy Awards, Gladiator won Best Picture and Best Actor for Russell Crowe.

Meanwhile, the recently released trailer for the highly anticipated sequel to Ridley Scott’s 2000 classic starring Russell Crowe promises to transport audiences to ancient Rome, where power, revenge and honor once reigned. The trailer opens with images of ancient Rome ruled by tyrannical emperors.


The trailer shows how Roman soldiers led by General Marcus Acacius invade and force Lucius into slavery. Lucius (portrayed by Paul Mescal) must enter the Colosseum after his home is conquered by the emperors who rule Rome with an iron fist. Lucius fights for survival and to settle the score, he forms an alliance with Macrinus. Who is a Roman power player played by Denzel Washington. The final moments show Lucius preparing for a showdown that will decide the future of Rome. “Gladiator II” is scheduled to hit theaters on November 15th.
