The Memphis Grizzlies announced Friday that they will wear retro Vancouver Grizzlies jerseys for select games of the 2024-25 season to mark the franchise’s 30th anniversary.

As part of the team noticeIt was noted that the Grizzlies will wear the all-white Vancouver Grizzlies Classic Edition jerseys, suggesting they will only be worn at home.

After being selected as an expansion team, the Vancouver Grizzlies made their NBA debut in 1995 and spent six seasons north of the border before moving to Memphis.

For five of those six years, the Grizz wore the iconic jerseys that they will wear in some games this season, and they are still celebrated as some of the most unique and attractive jerseys in league history.

This is the second time the Grizzlies have brought back the retro look to celebrate a groundbreaking season, as they wore teal Vancouver uniforms during the 2019-20 season in honor of the franchise’s 25th anniversary.

The Grizzlies’ time in Vancouver was marked by poor on-field results and a sharp decline in attendance, which ultimately led to the sale of the franchise and their move to Memphis.

In six years in Vancouver, the Grizzlies never won more than 23 games in a single season, but the team is still fondly remembered primarily for its uniforms.

It also introduced some popular players to the NBA, including Bryant “Big Country” Reeves, Shareef Abdur-Rahim and Mike Bibby.

There’s no question that the Grizzlies have had their greatest success in Memphis, having played 13 playoff games since moving, including seven straight from 2011 to 2017.

The Grizzlies ended a three-year playoff streak last season with a 27-55 record, but hopes are high for the 2024-25 season assuming Ja Morant, Desmond Bane and Marcus Smart can stay healthy after all losing in the last one Missed a lot of time this season.

Memphis will open its regular season with away games against the Utah Jazz and Houston Rockets on October 23rd and 25th before a home game against the Orlando Magic on October 26th.
