The No. 1-ranked Keizer Seahawks handed the Southeastern Fire their first loss of the season with a 17-10 win at Victory Field on Saturday night.


The Seahawks, who have had two of their last three games postponed or canceled due to hurricanes, improved to 5-0 (2-0 SUN) with the team’s fourth road win of the season.


Keizer outscored the Fire 352-308, including a 208-102 edge in the passing game. quarterback Shea Spencer finished the night with 208 yards on 20 of 30 passes and a touchdown. On the floor, Andrew Burnette managed 94 yards on 21 carries, including the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth.


With the win, Keizer improved to 5-2 all-time against the Fire, including a 3-1 finish in Lakeland, Florida. The win also extends the Seahawks nation’s longest winning streak to 16 games while Keizer improves to 15-0 all-time in the Sun Conference.


First quarter
Keizer 0, Southeast 0

  • The first 15 minutes proved to be a battle of defenses as each team had the ball twice but put no points on the board
  • On the Seahawks’ first possession: Keizer punter Ben Derby managed a 69-yard punt, the highest of his career, (third-longest punt in program history)
  • The Seahawks finished the first with nine plays, taking the ball to the SEU 32-yard line

Second quarter
Keizer 10, Southeast 10

  • The Seahawks scored their first points of the game with a 24-yard field goal Nico Cavanillas (12:24)
  • The field capped a 16-play, 63-yard drive that began at the end of the first quarter
  • The Fire took a 7-3 lead on a 31-yard touchdown pass from Henry Austad to Alex Reyes with 9:09 left in the half
  • Keizer responded with a six-play, 55-yard drive capped by a five-yard touchdown pass Shea Spencer To Maurico Porcha
  • The extra point scored gave Keizer a 10-7 lead with 6:24 left on the clock
  • SEU tied the game with 38 seconds left in the half on a 21-yard field goal by Joel McGrath

Third quarter
Keizer 10, Southeast 10

  • The Fire had a unique opportunity to take the lead early in the second half by blocking a punt from Derby and recovering the ball at the Keizer 22-yard line (12:55).
  • However, a holding penalty and a false start pushed SEU back to KU’s 37th-place finish
  • Three plays later, McGrath missed a 45-yard field goal attempt, leaving the game tied with 11:38 left in the third period
  • The Seahawks looked to retake the lead on the ensuing drive, but two consecutive penalties caused the drive to stall at the SEU 32-yard line (7:26).
  • McGrath tried again to give SEU the lead, this time with a 40-yard attempt, but the shot went wide left, leaving the score tied at 10-10.

Fourth quarter
Keizer 17, Southeastern 10

  • The Seahawks took the lead after a four-yard rushing touchdown Andrew Burnette
  • The quick TD and extra point gave Keizer a seven-point lead with 12:39 to play
  • A fumble by SEU’s Curtis Kimmons was recovered by Hunter HargraveIt’s at Southeastern 49 with 11:00 on the game clock
  • The Seahawks couldn’t take advantage of SEU’s mistake and put the ball away at 9:18
  • The Fire put together an 11-play drive that went 55 yards to the Keizer 30-yard line, but a failed fourth-down conversion (fourth-and-eight) put the ball back in with 3:35 to play Keizer’s hands
  • Keizer needed 2:57 before putting the ball back on fire with 38 seconds on the game clock
  • The Fire, starting from their own 15-yard line, could only muster six yards of offense when Keizer regained possession with two seconds left
