CLEVELAND – Guardians starting pitcher Tanner Bibee lasted 5⅔ innings despite taking a short rest against the New York Yankees in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series on Saturday.

The outing proved bittersweet for Bibee, however, as his final pitch was hit by Giancarlo Stanton 446 feet into left-center field for the game-winning home run in the sixth inning. With two outs and Gleyber Torres on third base, Bibee hit an 82.6 mph slider and Stanton fired it into the stands with an exit velocity of 117.5 mph to tie the score at 2-2.

Bibee passed Matthew Boyd as the Guardians’ pitcher with the longest start this postseason. Bibee allowed two runs and six hits, struck out two batters, walked none and struck out five. He threw 73 pitches, including 52 hits.

After Stanton’s home run, Bibee was replaced by standout rookie Cade Smith.

The Guardians began Game 5 trailing 3-1 in the best-of-seven ALCS and looking to avoid elimination.

Stanton’s home run was his fifth of the 2024 playoffs and 16th of his career in the postseason. With 16 playoff home runs, he passed Babe Ruth and teammate Aaron Judge for the fourth-most hits in Yankees history. Stanton trails only Bernie Williams (22), Derek Jeter (20) and Mickey Mantle (18). Ruth and Mantle all hit their home runs in World Series games before the postseason was expanded.
