Kamala Harris reveals her passion for Formula 1 and names her favorite driver

Lando Norris beat his rival Max Verstappen to take pole position for the US Grand Prix and realize his dream of the F1 championship.

Verstappen took his first victory in almost four months when he led every lap of the sprint race at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin earlier on Saturday, extending his title lead from 52 to 54 points.

Norris finished third – after being overtaken by Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz on the final lap – but recovered in qualifying to take the spot, beating Verstappen by just 0.031 seconds.

Norris set the pace early in the shootout for pole and was then lucky when George Russell crashed his Mercedes in the penultimate corner.

F1 US Grand Prix: George Russell after his crash

“It was a really good lap until turn 12, I lost a bit in turn 12 and lost a lot of lap time. I went into the second to last corner, turned in and it went into me.

“Maybe I pushed too hard and was quite disappointed with the damage to the car. We weren’t anywhere today.

“It seems to be a theme at the moment, if we find a sweet spot we can get poles and wins, but if we don’t then we’re nowhere. For me the result is really disappointing.”

Russell will start in P6 tomorrow…

F1 Grand Prix of the USA: McLaren team boss Andrea Stella…

“The first round was pretty perfect. I saw that Verstappen was on a fast lap, it could have been a problem – the yellow flag might have helped us. Overall, it’s encouraging that we’ve improved the car and adjusted the setup a bit. Lando and Oscar managed to bring everything together.

“Hopefully we will be able to reduce tire wear.”

F1 USA Grand Prix: Lando Norris on pole after qualifying!

“It was a beautiful lap, I couldn’t have driven much faster than I did. When you do one lap and think, ‘This is going to be hard to beat.’ We were on the defensive all weekend so I had to do something and today I did it – a cool lap and a nice way into the race tomorrow to start.

“It’s one of those tracks that makes you think, ‘Damn, this is fast.’ It puts a smile on your face. The quickest ending will put a smile on your face too. We’ve changed quite a bit, we’ve made the improvements. I was lucky and I’ll take it.

“I will do my homework, we have made some changes, time will tell. We will work hard, box number one is ticked, but tomorrow will be a tough race.”

F1 USA Grand Prix: Carlos Sainz after third qualifying …

“The goal was to make a step in qualifying, P5 yesterday and P3 today. The last lap was a bit disappointing, I was three tenths ahead. Now it’s easy to say some good progress.

“We should be in battle tomorrow.
