Both SPARC galleries are open for Arts Crawl | The South Pasadenan

Both SPARC galleries will be open for the Arts Crawl on Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m. The SPARC Center Gallery in the Fremont Center Theater building will host an exhibition of works by mixed media artist Karen Steen entitled “Celebrating Nature.”

Inspired by a threatened natural environment, Steen says she sees her vibrant, vibrant works “as ecosystems, a group of different elements and forces that have come together to form a balanced and dynamic system.” These are interpreted through a fusion of painting, drawing and paper forms laser cut from images of life forms in the natural world. “I try to give my pieces qualities of the biological world: variety, repetition, complexity, rhythm, balance and connection,” she explains.

Steen’s interest in nature’s diverse ecosystems began with his childhood fascination with tidepools – “little worlds full of life.” In addition to degrees from ArtCenter College of Design and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Steen, a Pasadena resident and South Pasadena native, has
is a certified California naturalist.

Celebrating Nature runs until November 9, 2024.
