Laura Dern and Liam Hemsworth’s 2024 romance film would have been much better without this problem

Laura Dern and Liam Hemsworth’s new Netflix film Lonely planet had a lot of potential, but one major problem marred the overall quality. Lonely planet tells the story of Dern’s character Katherine Loewe, a famous writer with writer’s block who travels to Morocco for a writing vacation. On the trip, she meets Hemsworth’s character Owen Brophy, who is in an unhappy relationship with his girlfriend Lily, herself an aspiring writer.

Against the beautiful Moroccan backdrop, Katherine and Owen begin to develop feelings for each other, which is complicated for a variety of reasons, not least the fact that Owen is still with Lily. The story tends to follow the predictable beats of a romantic drama, but that’s far from the film’s biggest problem. Rather, a central problem Lonely Planets Characters have a negative impact on the entire film.

“Lonely Planet’s supporting characters all fail.”

Outside of Dern and Hemsworth’s characters, Lonely Planets Characters are largely one-dimensional. This is particularly true for Owen’s girlfriend Lily Kemp (Diana Silvers), whose main purpose seems to be to contrast the greatness of Katherine with someone who is selfish, cruel and egotistical. This is most evident when Owen and Lily participate in a board game of guessing literary references, and Lily repeatedly suggests that Owen is unintelligent because he does not understand some of the clues.

Presumably this is meant to make the audience feel good about Owen cheating on Lily, but it’s not effective.

As a supportive love interest in contrast to Lily’s characterization as a “whiner,” Katherine steps in and reassures him that his pointers were not only accurate, but better than what Lily wanted him to give. Presumably this is meant to make the audience feel good about Owen cheating on Lily, but it’s not effective. Lily isn’t the only character to receive this treatment either. Katherine also has an ex-lover on the trip, Ugo Jaconelli (Adriano Giannini), whose main characteristic is that he is still in love with Katherine.

work.

Unfortunately, Dern and Hemsworth’s performances just aren’t enough Lonely planet Given this problem, work with the other characters in the film. It feels like the romantic arc between Katherine and Owen comes at the expense of the development of all the other characters and all the storylines that go beyond the romance – even ones that are important to Owen and Katherine, such as Owen’s complex relationship with his job.
