The Lindenwood football team (3-5, 2-2 BS/OVC) fell to Gardner-Webb (2-5, 1-2 BS/OVC) by a score of 42-35 on Saturday afternoon in Boiling Springs, NC

GAME OVERVIEW
Gardner-Webb scored early in the game to take a 7-0 lead. Lindenwood would respond to its first drive as Nate Glantz attached to Reece Thomas with a 21-yard touchdown strike over the middle to tie the game 7-7 with just over three minutes left. That would be the status after 15 minutes of play.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs took the lead back early in the second period, making the score 14-7. The Lions responded again with a big passing run Cortez Jones and a 44-yard catch Jeff Caldwell to open the drive. Jones would eventually reach the end zone for the sixth time that season, tying the game at 14. Now it was GWU’s turn to respond, and they did, retaking the lead at midfield, 21-14. On the next possession, Lindenwood set up a drive, but Gardner-Webb made an interception in the end zone to keep the lead. Gardner-Webb scored late in the quarter to take a 28-14 lead into halftime.

When the Lions came out of the locker room, they tried to get the ball Jeff Caldwell. The junior wideout made three catches for 92 yards on the first drive of the second half, including a 49-yard touchdown grab that pulled Lindenwood within one score, 28-21. Gardner-Webb reacted quickly and increased the lead to 35:21 with just under 10 minutes left in the third period. With just under three minutes to play, the Runnin Bulldogs extended their lead to 42-21. Lindenwood trailed by that score after three quarters.

The Lions capped a six-play, 75-yard drive early in the fourth quarter Steve Hall found the end zone from 17 yards out, making the score 42-28. The Black and Gold got a defensive stop on their next possession after GWU missed a field goal. However, Lindenwood was unable to capitalize. The Lions made one final push late in the fourth period Drew Krobath made a 23-yard touchdown catch with 31 seconds left to get within seven points at 42-35. The Lions were unable to recover the ensuing offside kick and would fail with that score.

QUOTABLE
“I appreciated our boys’ fight until the end, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough,” said head coach Jed Stugart. “We need to show consistency week in and week out in all phases of our team. I don’t think we matched their intensity at the start of this game and it’s difficult to get out of those if you don’t get a good start.”

Next week, Lindenwood hosts Western Illinois at home in St. Charles, Missouri. Kick-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m
