Two truths and a lie after Nebraska football is dominated by Indiana

The first of these I had to do, where after a game I didn’t feel like there was anything positive to say about the Nebraska football team. This was an incredibly gross game that was equal parts disturbing and confusing.

I, like many, believed Indiana was it The better team competing today. In my opinion, the Huskers’ offense wasn’t consistent enough to keep up with the Hoosiers’ potent attack. But I don’t think IU is 49 points better.

I still don’t think so Nebraska football is so bad. They played as poorly as possible, but I think Indiana wins this game nine times out of ten. The Huskers are simply not suited to this type of offense yet.

Yes, there are some Pretty good players like Ty Robinson on defense, but get pushed around a bit by big offensive lines. Keep in mind that while the Huskers stopped Rutgers’ rushing offense after the first quarter, that was more because the Scarlet Knights strangely got away from it.

Now it’s time for Tony White to recognize that and adapt. Maybe more run blitzes. Maybe just move the linebackers closer to the line on more plays. Something has to change. There are just too many holes being made in the offensive line that aren’t picked up until the runner is 2 or 3 yards further down the field.

That this is the second year of the “Why can’t our receivers separate themselves?” question, even though it’s essentially a whole new group, is concerning. It’s also concerning that there are plays where it’s pretty clear the receivers are just giving up on the play. And the penalties for blocking in the back are getting more and more annoying.

Quarterback Dylan Raiola is currently having major problems. He looks like a newbie. But it doesn’t help that he doesn’t get much from his receivers. One would have hoped that the Huskers would have found a way to gain more distance during the bye week, but Nebraska football had no answers.

I saw that cost a lot on Saturday. Even though there wasn’t the growth we were hoping for, this was never a team that was going to make the playoffs. It almost certainly wouldn’t be 9-3.

The Nebraska football team is still off to its best start since 2016. It’s the second time since 2014 that the team has picked up five wins this early in the season in back-to-back years. The next step is to get to a bowl. That probably won’t happen next week against Ohio State, but NU has four more chances after that. Including against 2-5 UCLA.

A bowl game could have been expected this season. That’s still very much in play. This loss was bad. That doesn’t mean there hasn’t been progress, although that is the prevailing opinion on social media.
