Elliot Page’s Film ‘Close To You’ Sets Debut Date For Netflix Streaming

Netflix has scheduled Elliot Page’s first film in six years, Close To You, to be released in the US from November 15, 2024, when it will make its streaming video-on-demand debut.

The film first premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in late 2023 and was recently released in theaters in select countries starting August 16 over the summer. Now, just three months later and after a VOD launch, Netflix will only get the film in the US for now.

Page has strong ties to Netflix, having recently completed the fourth and final episode of Netflix The Umbrella Academy. In this film he plays Sam, who now returns home as a trans man for a family reunion, with mixed results. Of course, it’s a personal story and a passion project for Page, considering he himself made the transition four years ago, in 2020. Hillary Baack, Peter Outerbridge and Wendy Crewson also star in the R-rated title.

Critics have been largely positive about the film since its premiere. Marya Gates of RoberEbert said the film “served as a reintroduction of Page the Movie Star to audiences and shows that he remains a unique talent. “I can’t wait to see what he does next.” Ty Burr was more critical, saying: “The problem is a script that feels largely improvised (despite Page and director Dominic Savage being credited as screenwriters), resulting in far too many scenes that play out like a series of unpleasant banalities.”

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the film has received mixed reviews from audiences since its premiere earlier this year. Of course, given the controversial nature of page switching in certain online circles, this shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. Of course, you can form your own opinion next month.
