First Annual Walk for Hope at Oakwood Mall

First Annual Walk for Hope at Oakwood Mall

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) – The first annual Walk for Hope at Oakwood Mall brought people together early Saturday to take steps in the fight against breast cancer.

As survivors and supporters united, over 50 people gathered at Oakwood Mall to march for hope against breast cancer.

One of the walk participants, Rachel Luther, shared her journey battling breast cancer. Not once, but twice.

“I was diagnosed in 2008 and went through everything, mastectomy, chemotherapy, you name it. And thought I was fine and clear, and I should have been, but 14.5 years later it came back and I had to have radiation and another surgery,” said Rachel Luther.

Luther, now in remission for a little over two years.

To make the event more than just a walk, there were vendors including a cancer doula and mammography clinic professionals to educate people about when, where and how to get screened for breast cancer.

Susan G. Komen Development Director Robin Luther explained what the Walk for Hope is intended to do for those affected by breast cancer.

“The walk itself is a win for Susan G. Komen and I’m very happy about it because we can help local breast cancer patients get through their treatments and we also provide a lot of money for groundbreaking research into new cures . “the most aggressive cancers.” Robin Luther said.

Robin went on to explain how holding such events can help raise awareness about breast cancer.

“Events like this are important because they really raise awareness about breast cancer. People are listening a little more now and there’s pink stuff. But there are always things you can do that can help. And be empowered to know what you can do to help yourself, your friends, and your neighbors.”
