The Colorado Avalanche get their first win of the season

The Colorado Avalanche broke their winning streak from the start of the year, picking up a 4-3 OT win over the Anaheim Ducks on Friday night at Ball Arena.

Overall, the Avalanche dominated the game and had almost 50 shots on goal. Still, the Avs needed OT to tie the score.

So let’s take a look at the game notes below as the Colorado Avalanche got back on the positive side against the Anaheim Ducks.

Game notes from the Colorado Avalanche’s first win of the season

Ross Colton is the real deal

Ross Colton scored two goals on Friday night. But these goals weren’t just tip-ins or loose pucks. They were absolute rockets that Ducks goalkeeper Lukas Dostal couldn’t stop.

Colton was all over the ice, taking advantage of the speed and opportunities that come with playing on the same line as Mikko Rantanen and Nathan MacKinnon. Going forward, it will be interesting to see what the Avs do when Jonathan Drouin returns.

Personally, I would like to see an extension of Colton’s involvement in the leadership role, even if Drouin returns. At this point, the Avs need to come out on top as the club looks to gain momentum in any way possible.

The Avs struggled to beat the Ducks

The Avs played with a sense of urgency from the first faceoff. Despite the intensity, the Avs were down 2-0 after 20 minutes. Alexandar Georgiev once again looked uncertain as the Avs appeared headed for their fifth loss of the year.

Then it seemed like a switch had been flipped in that first break. The Avs took control of the game and chipped away at the lead until Colton gave the Avs their first lead of the night in the third period.

Unfortunately, the Avs couldn’t finish the game and conceded the equalizer with twelve seconds left. Then three top-class scoring chances failed to materialize in stoppage time. Perhaps the most striking was Sam Girard’s shot hitting the crossbar.

In the end, Nathan MacKinnon was the winner of the game as he took all three Ducks players on the ice himself and scored a beautiful goal right until the end. While Friday night’s performance was commendable, the truth is that the Avs had to work hard to beat the Ducks.

Given the amount of talent on the Colorado Avalanche, the club shouldn’t have had so much trouble winning. But given the current circumstances, victory is definitely a welcome prospect.

Alexandar Georgiev had a comeback game

It was great to see Alexandar Georgiev have his best game of the year. Despite a shaky start in which he scored two goals on eight shots in the first half, he calmed down in the second and third periods, especially after the Avs took control of the game.

Ultimately, Georgiev made 16 saves. But it was the mad scramble towards the end of the third period that could have been a turning point for Georgiev, as his confidence could have been boosted despite missing the equaliser.

Ultimately, Friday night’s win could have been the start of a turnaround for Colorado. Time will tell where the Avs go from here.
