The first snow of the year causes damage in southern Utah

Cedar City – The first snow of the year has already caused some problems in southern Utah. Cities report significant damage to trees caused by the heavy, wet flakes.

Cedar City and Parowan both reported significant tree damage following the storm, and residents are now busy cleaning up.

The storm also appeared to have caused “significant delays and diversions” at Cedar City Regional Airport, although those were resolved by Friday morning, an airport spokesman said. The airport was able to keep its runways clear after the storm, but the airport’s weather station was damaged, leading to the delays.

Cedar City said in a Facebook post that the city will help people clean up the large amount of tree branches that were broken as a result of the storm. Residents can take branches to Bulloch Pit, located at 1050 North Lund Highway. The city asked residents not to bring any more waste into the pit. Residents can also stack the branches on the curb in front of their property, and crews will pick them up next week, the post said.

The city of Parowan demanded that residents there pile up the branches parallel to the road.

“Stack branches as neatly as possible to help public works operators work quickly and efficiently to clear this snowstorm,” the city said on Facebook.

Both cities asked residents not to park on the street so that cleaners could help clean up the branches.
