3 dead, 8 injured in trail shooting in Holmes County

HOLMES COUNTY, Miss. (WLBT) – Three people have died and eight have been injured after a group of “young people” got into a fight at a horseback riding party, according to Sheriff Willie March.

According to Sheriff March, the Holmes County Sheriff’s Department received a call about a shooting on Highway 17 around 12:30 Saturday morning.

Sheriff March says there was a homecoming game Friday night and about three to four hours later a large group of young people decided to have a party at the ride.

This ride then escalated when a group at the party got into a fight and pulled out weapons.

Shots were then fired and three people were killed.

Those victims were identified by Sheriff March as Martel Gibson, 25, Shundra Chestnut, 19, and John Jenkins, also 19.

Gibson and Jenkins were both from Durant, Mississippi, and Chestnut was from Kosciusko, Mississippi.

Eight other victims are in different hospitals due to injuries caused by the incident.

This case is currently under investigation and details of possible suspects have not been released.

These deaths mark 15 homicides in Holmes County this year.
