Wallpaper is one of the most underrated aspects of interior design. It’s like the cherry on top of a room – No, you don’t necessarily need thatbut it adds the perfect finishing touch to any room.

You know, I discovered peel and stick wallpaper last year and it has drastically changed the entire mood of my room (for the better). I had bare white walls, and since there wasn’t a lot of art in my room, my living room seemed more and more gloomy every time I looked at it. It was officially time to give my apartment a new lease of life, and I knew that first I had to address the sterile atmosphere of my living room. Finally, I decided to experiment with wallpaper and came across a print that I knew I had to get my hands on. And once I installed it on my walls, my room looked significantly better.

Since then, I’ve casually looked through wallpaper prints here and there. Just as there are trends in fashion and furniture, there are also trendy designs in wallpaper that cause a stir. To get an insight into the upcoming trends for next year, I spoke to Aino Heinäsuo, Head of Design at Redecor, about all things wallpaper.

“Wallpaper is perfect for creating a statement feature wall,” she says, adding that it “adds personality to key social areas like the living room.” “Surprisingly, bathrooms also benefit from wallpaper. In small powder rooms it can create an eye-catching jewelry box effect, while in larger master bathrooms it adds an elegant element,” she adds.

When it comes to the durability and care of different types of wallpaper, Heinäsuo shared her recommendations. “Vinyl wallpaper is perfect for high-traffic areas such as hallways, kitchens and bathrooms because of its durability, washability and ease of care,” she says. “Textured or fabric wallpaper, while visually striking, is more delicate and requires careful handling, making it more suitable for low-traffic spaces such as bedrooms or formal living rooms where wear and tear is minimal.”

“Fortunately, wallpaper trends tend to be broad and focus more on creating a specific mood in interiors rather than limiting themselves to one color or pattern,” says Heinäsuo. “The era of pure white walls is far behind us and textured walls, including wallpaper, are highly recommended in modern interiors. While many designs are inspired by traditional styles, such as the resurgence of Arts & Crafts style prints, we are also seeing an abundance of bold colors, patterns and shapes that make a strong impact. Walls are no longer a backdrop – they are an integral part of the design, enhancing and complementing the overall color palette of the room.”

“After this phase of bold, statement-making designs, I expect we will start to move towards solid patterns that emphasize texture over intricate prints,” says Heinäsuo. “In general, patterns age faster than textures or colors, making textured wallpaper a timeless choice that can adapt to changing design trends.”

“Texture can often have a greater impact than the pattern itself, as it dramatically influences the perception of a design,” she adds. “Whether the surface is smooth, textured, glossy or matte, it can completely change the way the pattern appears. For bold patterns, I always recommend opting for minimal texture and a matte finish so that the design stands out without overwhelming the space. With plain wallpaper, however, the structure can take center stage and add depth and interest. In general, I advise against glossy wallpapers as they reduce the impression of quality and run the risk of appearing cheap. My personal favorites are colorful, solid color wallpapers with distinct textures – they can even evoke the feel of certain painting styles and add a sophisticated, artistic touch to a room.”
