Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has urged Gabriel Jesus to step up and “earn the right to play more” as the Brazilian striker continues his search for form and scores his first goal of the season. The 27-year-old striker, who has started just one Premier League game this season, is yet to score in eight appearances in all competitions.

Jesus, who joined Arsenal from Manchester City, scored twice in pre-season but has not scored since January, when he scored in a win against Nottingham Forest. Despite his early commitment, Kai Havertz has emerged as a more effective option up front, leaving Jesus in a supporting role.

However, Arteta remains optimistic about the striker’s performances, praising his work ethic and willingness to take chances. “He was in great form, probably the best he has ever been with us,” Arteta said. “He was flying in pre-season and unfortunately suffered a groin injury which kept him out for a few weeks. Now he has to find his rhythm again.”

The Arsenal boss stressed that Jesus still had an important role to play but needed to prove himself once again. “He started two games in a row against Atalanta and Bolton and came on as a substitute against Southampton. Now he has to earn the right to play more. He has our full support and we know his versatility makes him a crucial player for us,” Arteta added.

With Arsenal’s squad struggling with several fitness issues following the international break, Jesus may have the chance to feature in their upcoming game against Bournemouth on Saturday evening. Captain Martin Odegaard is out with an ankle injury, while Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Havertz are all struggling with minor fitness issues but could still play.

Giving an update on Saka, Arteta said: “It’s not a serious injury. He’s fine. He was almost fit enough for England’s second game. He has been training and we will assess him further in the next session.”

Arteta also addressed Havertz’s condition, saying: “He had a few problems, but he was brilliant in communicating with the national team. “If he trains well today, there’s a good chance he’ll play tomorrow.”

As for Martinelli, Arteta revealed that the Brazilian winger had returned to London late on Thursday and was being assessed. “Gabby just landed yesterday afternoon. He has done some light training and today we are going to intensify it. We have to decide if it’s worth taking a risk because I know he’ll say he’s fine.”
