Person of interest arrested in stadium shooting that injured teenage girl

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) – Dothan Police Chief Will Benny said a person of interest was arrested overnight in connection with the shooting of a 10-year-old girl Friday night outside Rip Hewes Stadium.

The chief said more information would be released Saturday.

The girl suffered minor injuries when she was possibly shot in the parking lot.

Benny said she was hit by a wayward bullet that may have ricocheted just after 9 p.m.

The girl, who sustained a minor injury, was taken by private car to a local medical facility for treatment. It will not be announced publicly.

Investigators almost immediately identified a vehicle that may have been involved.

“We have a very robust camera system and officers who were on scene when (the shooting) occurred,” Benny said. “We’ll get to the bottom of this.”

The shooting occurred around the time city rivals Houston Academy and Northside Methodist were finishing their football game.
