Why is the Midcentury Modern Ju-Nel so popular?

Well, the Midcentury Modern Ju-Nel isn’t just a rare find. It is truly a masterpiece. Architects Lyle Rowley and Jack Wilson founded their firm after working under Howard Meyer, one of the pioneers of modern architecture. In 1958, they began designing homes primarily in East and Northeast Dallas by mixing the names of their wives, June and Nelda. They loved the challenging site, building around and between the trees.

Each Mid-Century Modern Ju-Nel features features such as exposed beams, cobblestone floors, high ceilings, and some very unique fireplaces. Outside, you’ll generally find mud brick and stone with low rooflines. Although Rowley and Wilson built for the average home buyer, they also created some larger homes for well-known clients such as model outsider Kim Dawson and advertising legend Stan Richards.

It is interesting to note that the Ju-Nel houses have the same cachet and following as Charles Dilbeck’s. Like Dilbeck, this is largely due to one man’s dedication. The remaining Dilbecks were researched and cataloged by Willis Winters, who helped found the Dilbeck Architecture Conservancy and is currently writing a book about the architect. Mark Weeks has dedicated almost two decades to researching Ju-Nel houses and we can safely say that after launching his website ju-nel.com, he is now the authority on the duo.

When Amy Timmerman of Dave Perry Miller of Bar Group told us this Midcentury Modern Ju-Nel was coming to market, we knew it would be well received. This 1,868-square-foot, three-bedroom, two-bathroom home built in 1962 in Lake Highlands is a testament to the company’s productivity at its peak.

Most Ju-Nel-designed homes are located in this area, with White Rock Valley being a particular hotspot. This home, with its open floor plan, walls of windows and unique fireplace, is the epitome of Ju-Nel design. The recently replaced roof and contemporary lighting added by the current owners add to its appeal.

Not only is this a super cool home, it’s also in a great location. Lake Highlands is a family-oriented neighborhood. It is highly sought after because it offers a small town feel with excellent outdoor opportunities. There are great hiking trails and parks and you can be at White Rock Lake in minutes. Lake Highlands also offers some of the best schools in Dallas.

Timmerman has this Midcentury Modern Ju-Nel available at 9735 Bellewood Drive for $765,000. We recommend you come to the open day directly on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and secure this offer before it’s too late!
