“The film will surprise people”: The Netflix directors of “Don’t Move” reveal why the thriller is a unique and intense emotional ride

When Netflix released the exciting trailer for its new claustrophobic thriller Don’t move, I couldn’t wait to be paralyzed with fear thanks to the exciting yet simple cut that definitely made my heart beat faster. But what I appreciated most was that the new film’s trailer didn’t spoil the whole plot.

Don’t move has an impressive caliber of talent behind the camera who know exactly what makes the best horror films, especially directors Adam Schindler and Brian Netto. They have already worked with the Legendaries evil Dead Director Sam Raimi on his 50 states of terror anthology on Quibi and now Raimi serves as a producer on Don’t move.

Don’t move The focus is on Iris (Kelsey Asbille)’s fight to survive after being injected with a paralytic drug. Her entire nervous system shuts down as a mysterious killer (Finn Wittrock) stalks her deep in the forest. The stranger is never seen in the trailer, but he can be heard threateningly telling Iris what’s coming as the agent gradually takes over her body over the course of 20 minutes.

It’s everyone’s nightmare to be chased through the woods by a murderer and you can’t move your limbs no matter how hard you try. But as this horror story comes to life Don’t move, Schindler and Netto want us to remove any preconceived notions about what awaits us in the surprising new Netflix film.

Schindler told TechRadar: “I think Netflix has cut such a good trailer that it’s not spoiling and I think the film will surprise people. I think some people watch a trailer and then just decide what kind of trailer. But some of the responses we’ve gotten just from the marketing materials say, “Oh, that’s not what I do.” [expected.]”You hear the concept and you have an idea in your head of what it would look like, and I think that’s not the case at all.” It’s something completely different. So I’m just excited for people to actually see what it is. Hopefully it’s as anxiety-inducing as we think and as exciting as we think. Hopefully they’ll feel something at the end, where after the film you’ll think, “Wow, that was an intense ride and I enjoyed every moment of it, but I also felt something.”

Netto added: “You get hooked and then suddenly you realize you’re halfway there or three quarters of the way there and you just want to see where it goes. I think it will catch people. This will be it.” Surprise people this way. They may think they’re just going to have a fun passive watch and just get sucked into it.

Collaboration with Sam Raimi

The iconic Raimi was one of the producers behind it Don’t move. He told TechRadar: “Sam is great to work with. This is the second time we have worked with Sam. We worked with Sam on our project.” 50 states of terror Episode which was a horror anthology about Quibi – Rest in Peace. Sam is very, very practical, so we spent hours studying the script and reading every single line with him. He was very keen to make sure we knew what reaction we wanted to get from the audience and then make sure everything was geared towards achieving that. He gave us probably the best screennote script we’ve ever gotten for someone who’s been at the top of the game for more than 40 years. It’s like we just sat there and took it all in.”

Finding the horror in the beauty

We all know the usual horror cliché of fleeing from a killer through a pitch-black forest in the middle of the night, which of course creates tension and fear in the viewer. But inside Don’t move, Iris is attacked by the murderer in broad daylight in the middle of a breathtaking landscape, which makes the whole thing all the more frightening. As Schindler said: “It was a fun challenge for us to make this terrible event happen in this most beautiful place. We asked ourselves: ‘How? How do you do that?’” An exciting film set in broad daylight in a beautiful location, something we had never seen before.”

Despite being set in the vast beauty of the Bulgarian forests where they filmed, there is tension and isolation Don’t move is enhanced by cinematographer Zach Kuperstein (who also shot). barbarian) with the Sony Venice camera.

“We wanted to make sure we captured the isolation despite knowing she was in a place that in turn felt beauty. It’s incredible beauty, but it also makes you feel very small and insignificant,” Netto said. “And she is someone who is suffering. She suffers when she’s in public around people because she feels so isolated, and so we really wanted to capture that on camera. So we worked with Zach, the cameraman. We talked about how best to capture that, what lenses to use, and then how to frame the shot to make sure the film could live in big places. Then we get closer and closer I’ve seen the marketing materials, it’s her face and we live a lot from her face. As soon as she starts to lose her mobility, we are on her fingers, we are on her eyes, the things that can express what she is going through in that moment.

The nightmare unfolds in real time

Netto shared, “It’s pretty close to real time. The three things we said we didn’t want to do are: we didn’t want to do a voiceover, we didn’t want to live completely in her head, and we wanted to tell it.” It was a linear story, but I think That made it more jarring for us because we always knew that the idea of slowly losing mobility again, whether people are afraid of deep water or not, if you’re claustrophobic or afraid of heights, you want to take advantage of those moments. I think that suspense films are about exploiting these moments, so we wanted to live in them as much as possible.”

Don’t move will be released on Netflix on October 25th.
