Women’s swimming and diving: Macalester tops Luther in first meet of season

DECORAH, Iowa – The Macalester College women’s swimming and diving team kicked off the 2024-25 season with a win over Luther College on Friday night in Luther. The Scots won 10 of the 16 contests and outscored the Norse by 168-131 points.

Macalester opened the meet with a senior team win in the 200-yard medley relay Verity Wray-Raabolle (Owatonna, Minn./Bethlehem Academy), first year Carolyn Wolking (Micanopy, Fla./Santa Fe College), senior Caroline Chapon (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) and Junior Emma Henry (Chesapeake, Virginia/Oscar Smith) in 1:53.21.

Wolking was one of several freshmen who made a splash at their first collegiate meet, winning the 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.22) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:35.43). First year fellow Madeline Nuckolls (Lawrence, Kan./Free State) won three events: the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:59.22), the 200-yard butterfly (2:13.29) and the 100-yard butterfly (1: 10,13). The seniors also had solid performances: Wray-Raabolle won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:01.25 and Chapon took first in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:17.08. As a junior, Henry won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:15.42 Hannah Zurn (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) took first place in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:35.81.

The juniors took second place Skye Schmit (Stillwater, Minn.) in the 1,000-yard freestyle, freshman year Amalia Shields (Madison, Wis./Madison West) in the 200-yard freestyle, freshman year Julia Goh (Williamstown, Mass./Northfield Mount Herman School) in the 100-yard breaststroke and Chapon in the 50-yard freestyle. In diving, senior Kate Yehle (Madison, Wis./James Madison Memorial) placed second on the 3-meter board and third on the 1-meter board.

Macalester hosts the College of Saint Benedict in the first home game of the season at Riley Pool on Saturday, October 26th.
