Farm opens education center for children

A new education center is to be opened to teach children why it is important to farm in an environmentally friendly manner.

The classroom at Big Wood Estate in Lingfield, Surrey, is due to open on Saturday.

The mixed farm, which covers 270 hectares, aims to farm in a way that protects the natural environment.

Farm owner Kate Bigwood told BBC Radio Surrey: “It’s about teaching young people about food, nature and farming.”

Although the educational program began in 2023, the new classroom was recently built thanks to a grant.

“We just have to start teaching other people to think differently and do things differently.”

Ms Bigwood said the aim was to farm “with and alongside nature”.

“It’s not them or us,” she explained.
