Calumet Football sends Gladstone; L’Anse claims first win – Saturday Sports Wrap

High school

Last night in high school football…

  • Negaunee quickly took the lead, outlasting Houghton 31-12. The Gremlins failed on their first play from scrimmage and the Miners scored two plays later. By the end of the first quarter, Negaunee had added two more touchdowns on 30-yard passes to Ian Engstrom and an 18-yard pass to Baron Heslip. Houghton scored on a 44-yard run from Jay Halonen. The defense dominated the rest of the game. The Miners fumbled on the second play of the second half and Houghton capitalized on a 12-yard touchdown run from Halonen. Negaunee’s final score came late in the game. The Gremlins fall to 3-5 and will end their season at Hancock in the Copper Bowl game next Friday.   • Calumet also got off to a quick start, stopping Gladstone 19-6. The Braves botched the first kickoff and the Copper Kings took advantage, scoring on a 24-yard run by Ben Anderson. The teams exchanged possession and scored no more goals in the first half, although Calumet went on a 10-minute, 13-play drive that ended with a failed fourth down conversion attempt. The Kings took control early in the second half, scoring on their first possession with a 16-yard run by Anderson and on their second possession with an 18-yard run by quarterback Ted Loukus. Gladstone scored a late goal. The Copper Kings are now 5-3 and could clinch a playoff spot next week at home against L’Anse.   • Hancock fell to Westwood 32-8. The Bulldogs fall to 1-7.
  • L’Anse outscored Gwinn 40-22 to earn its first win of the season.
  • Lake Linden-Hubbell edged Ironwood 16-14. Nate St. Onge ran for 130 yards and a touchdown on 25 attempts. Quarterback Brady Axford ran for 84 yards on 18 attempts, and Josh Daavettila ran seven times for 28 yards and a score. The Lakes improve to 3-5 and will close out the season next Saturday at home against Ontonagon.
  • Ontonagon suffered a 63-6 home loss to Forest Park.

On today’s volleyball schedule, Calumet hosts a Division 1-2-3-4 quadrangle. Marquette will represent Division One; Kingsford Division Two; the Copper Kings Division Three; and Forest Park Division Four. Competitions start at 10am this morning, two gyms will be used. The public is welcome.

The UP Cross Country finals will be played today at Pictured Rocks Golf Course in Munising.

College football

The MTU football team plays at Ferris State this afternoon.

Northern Football hosts Roosevelt University today.

College hockey

Northern’s hockey team defeated Alaska 2-1 last night to secure its first win of the season. These teams are back in action tonight in Marquette.

Tech hockey has the weekend off.

The Michigan Tech football team lost a 1-0 decision at Davenport University yesterday. The Huskies will play at Ferris State tomorrow afternoon.

Justina L’Esperance’s hat-trick gave the Northern women’s team a 4-1 win at Ferris yesterday. The Wildcats will play in Davenport tomorrow.

The North men’s team lost 1-0 to Saginaw Valley State yesterday. The Wildcats will entertain Davenport tomorrow.

College volleyball

  • Michigan Tech lost to Quincy 3-0 (19-25, 18-25-18, 21-25) and defeated Tiffin 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-18). The Huskies face Findlay this afternoon.
  • Northern Michigan extended its winning streak to six games with a narrow 3-2 (16-25, 25-13, 22-25, 25-16, 17-15) win over Findlay and a 3-1 (25-19). . 25-21, 22-25, 25-21) triumph over Indianapolis. The Wildcats will face Rockhurst this afternoon.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers and Calumet Wolverines open their season with an early game against each other tonight. The faceoff will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Colosseum.

NHL

The red one Wings visit the Predators today. Coverage begins at 1:45 a.m. on 99.3 The Lift.

The Wings have called up Marco Kasper from Grand Rapids. He was their first-round draft pick in 2022 (number eight overall).

The Pistons open the regular season on Wednesday at home against the Pacers. Coverage begins at 6:35 a.m. on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Yankees beat the Guardians 8-6 last night to take a 3-1 lead in the American League Championship Series. New York could advance to the World Series with a win tonight in Cleveland.

In the National League Championship Series, the Mets beat the Dodgers 12-6. LA leads this series 3-2 and could advance to the World Series with a win tomorrow night in Los Angeles.

NFL

The Lions face the undefeated Vikings in a 1:00 game tomorrow on 99.3 The Lift. Minnesota running back Aaron Jones is listed as questionable for the game.

The Packers host the Texans in a 1:00 contest.
