The Boilermakers have earned the nickname “Spoilermakers” because of their tendency to ruin the seasons of ranked opponents who overlook Purdue or are simply beaten by Purdue. The Spoilermakers have 17 wins against AP Top 5 teams despite being unranked, the most wins ever.

Before the game, the Ducks announced that tight end Terrance Ferguson would not be available for the game. Oregon was without defensive end Jordan Burch against Ohio State and is also listed as out.

Lanning is one of the younger coaches in all of college football, but his teams have yet to suffer disappointment when considered favorites against an unranked opponent. The week before the game, Lanning previewed his opponent, the Boile.

โ€œI know coach Walters is a phenomenal coach and does a really good job, but what they did and how they were able to use Ryan Browne in the running game led to a lot of different problems,โ€ Lanning said. โ€œYou’re trying to assess, okay, who you’re going to see, what’s coming from the previous offense, what’s different and new now. So it’s part of our job to kind of figure that out, but they definitely present some new challenges and will make it difficult for us on Friday.”
