Second generation businesses believe in customer service and giving back to the community

After 40 years in business, the team at Housser’s Paint and Wallpaper knows how to take care of their customers.

“We really pride ourselves on our customer service and our ability to help our customers choose the color they want, what would match their new flooring, vanity, etc. It’s this type of service that shows we go above and beyond what we do for our customers,” said Nathan Housser, who co-owns the popular local store with his wife, Jennifer.

Housser’s was founded 40 years ago by Nathan’s father James and his wife Lorna in a small storefront on Mississaga Street. Four years later, the Houssers moved the store to its current location at 87 Colborne St. West. Since then, the store has expanded to include an addition and an off-site warehouse.

“I grew up in this business,” Housser said. “I studied automotive marketing, but since I started here at 14, the shop and this business has really been in my blood. It is an honor to continue the family business, I am very proud of it.”

When the store opened in the 1980s, much of the space was covered in wallpaper. In the years that followed, wallpaper took up less and less space, but now, according to Housser, it is making a bit of a comeback. “We also carry window coverings and blinds, and about a third of our business revolves around those items,” he said.

Housser truly enjoys helping people and says that is the biggest attraction he finds in his business. “I love how color changes houses. Customers come in and are thrilled with the transformation and results. I love seeing that reward for the customer.”

Housser also enjoys helping his community in other ways and sees it as rewarding. “We sponsor a regular Orillia Matters column that focuses on various nonprofit organizations in Orillia, and I’m really pleased that we can support these valuable organizations in this way,” he said.

Additionally, Housser’s has supported several youth sports teams, Mariposa House Hospice, CFUW/Orillia Homes Sponsorship and Cornerstone Baptist Church. “It feels good to help your community and it only helps your community grow stronger,” Housser said.

What lies ahead for this dynamic local company? “To continue to serve our customers as best as possible,” said Housser.

“There aren’t many businesses left that are run by the second generation. I am proud of this legacy. It was a privilege and a fun ride! I look forward to the next 40 years of Housser’s Paint and Wallpaper!”
