Springfield police seize a firearm and arrest three people after the gun was pointed at a teenager

SPRINGFIELD – A firearm was seized and three people were arrested Thursday evening after a teenager reported being attacked with a gun by a group on a stolen golf cart, authorities said.

The Springfield Police Department’s Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU), led by Sergeants Christopher Hitas and David Robillard, and officers from Troop “C” responded to the incident on Wilbraham Avenue around 6 p.m. A teenager had reported that a person pointed a gun at him from a golf cart with 4-5 other teenagers.

Investigators were able to locate and arrest the golf cart occupants.

Two men, including 28-year-old Nelson Cruz of Springfield, attempted to escape.

Cruz allegedly threw the firearm over a fence in the 300 block of Walnut Street before being arrested.

The weapon was subsequently seized.

Following the investigation, Cruz and two juveniles were arrested.

Cruz is charged with carrying a firearm without a license and receiving stolen property valued at over $1,200.

The golf cart was identified as stolen from American International College.

Those not charged have been released, and due to their minor status, the names and specific charges against the teens are being withheld.

The investigation is ongoing.
