Texas Longhorns legend Colt McCoy is “so happy” to return to the Lone Star Showdown

The Texas Longhorns are in the middle of their SEC schedule and have many important games left, but none compare to the Lone Star showdown in the final week of the season against the Texas A&M Aggies.

A duel that has not taken place since November 24, 2011. Kyle Field will provide a playoff-like atmosphere for the Aggies in a game that will ensure their prestige next year.

Texas legend and former quarterback Colt McCoy is perhaps one of the players most excited for the return of this rivalry. In his four years at Texas, the Longhorns had a 2-2 record against the Aggies, but McCoy had the last laugh, going 49-39 his senior year and throwing for 304 yards and four touchdowns.

“This game, my entire childhood I watched this game on the Friday after Thanksgiving,” McCoy said on the website Always college football Podcast with Greg McElroy. “I had family members that went to A&M and I didn’t know where to go. I remember you watching this game. That’s what you did on Thanksgiving.”

Some Texas fans would argue that the Red River showdown against the Oklahoma Sooners can be called Texas’ biggest rival, but McCoy disagrees.

“Oklahoma is very special. It will be played in the Cotton Bowl. It is halfway between Norman and Austin. It is the tradition that is split down the middle. We’re going through the same tunnel,” McCoy said. “Texas-Texas A&M is an in-state rivalry. That’s the game. Everyone in Texas is tuned in and you know it’s around Thanksgiving. So to bring this game back, holy cow.”

Historically, the Longhorns have the edge in the game. Texas has a winning record of 76-37-5 against the Aggies. But for now, both teams played great to start the season and are ranked first and second in the SEC standings as of Friday.

Texas is obviously more talented, but will Kyle Field help Texas A&M get some magic back in Game 1?

“I’ve lost at Kyle Field before and I think it’s one of the coolest places to play in college football,” McCoy said. “I’m not afraid to say that. It’s a great environment. The fans are loud and you can’t hear them.”

This reunion will go down in the history books.

The game is scheduled for Saturday, November 30th, with kick-off still to be determined.
