Fairfax County first graders mentored by high school students – NBC4 Washington

First graders from Fairfax County visited West Springfield High School students on their soccer field for an interactive learning experience.

First-graders at Cardinal Forest Elementary School were greeted like football players, cheered and high-fived as they ran through a tunnel full of cheerleaders. The students were brought together with high school students to read together, enjoying at first glance what all children dream of – being adults.

A teacher from Cardinal Forest has a son on the soccer team, and that’s how this special idea for a field trip came about. Principals at both schools say it’s a way to build community.

“They have seen how our football players, our cheerleaders, inspiring young minds and future Spartans can be great not only on the field, in competition, but as students in the classroom,” said West Springfield Principal Mike Mukai.

Senior Jonathan Evans has practiced with it before.

“I thought it would be a fun opportunity. On Saturdays I tutor a young child in reading and math, so I thought it was a chance to give back a little more,” he said. “These guys are great.”

Not only was it a great experience for the little ones, it was also just as much fun for the high school students.

“I was just so excited to read to the little kids. I think it’s great to develop a closer connection with them,” said Olivia Lang.

The excitement and admiration that Cardinal Forest students felt was truly captivating.

“I love meeting the cheerleaders,” said first-grader Joey Catonguay. “It’s just my dream come true.” I saw my first cheerleader.
