East Texas hunters warned about wildfire prevention measures

NACOGDOCHES, Texas (KTRE) – Soon many East Texans will be heading to their hunting spots. Officials urge those who go out to be aware of fire restrictions in their area.

A fire ban has been in effect for 23 counties in East Texas since Friday.

“With more people outside and in the woods during the season, there is a higher influx,” said Laura Stevens, public information officer for the Texas A&M Forest Service.

On Thursday, the agency reported nine wildfires across the state. According to Texas A&M AgriLife, 65% of wildfires occur during hunting season.

“We all need an extra level of awareness and safety,” Stevens said.

She explained various activities that could potentially cause a fire. If you’re going off-road, she recommends keeping cars and ATVs well maintained.

“Double-check that your tires are properly inflated and your wheel bearings are in good condition, because anything could cause a spark,” Stevens said.

Motorists are advised to avoid parking a moving vehicle on dry grass.

“The catalytic converters, the exhaust fumes from there, it’s hot [and] it could start a fire,” Stevens said.

When attaching trailers to your vehicles, it is recommended that tow chains are the correct length to avoid sparking. Stevens also suggested adding a fire extinguisher and water to your safety equipment.

“We demand everything we can do to prevent this,” she said.

In East Texas, the white-tailed deer hunting season runs from November 2nd to January 5th. Duck season runs from November 9th to December 1st and from December 7th to January 26th.
