As a first time voter…

As a first time voter…

Being a first-time voter in the 2024 election brings with it many emotions and responsibilities. I look forward to using my voice in this election in a way that makes big changes in my local community and my country. This is a privileged milestone that I always thought about when I was younger, without realizing it would come so soon. I am a young adult and a student, so my generation is the next generation that will be future leaders in society. Exercising our right to vote gives us the chance to raise our voices and be heard on issues that affect us and those we directly love. Since I am also a student, this is also a time of learning and growth. Voting is a powerful way we can contribute to the future of our country and the communities in which we serve. By voting, we can influence the policies put in place and advocate for our needs and those of others.

Every election was important; However, this election is more than just a vote. It is an opportunity to actively shape the future of our local communities and the nation as a whole.

Voting after age 18 has been called “the most impactful and exciting election of your life” for a long time or as long as I have been conscious enough to remember. At least from my mother. She has always believed in standing up for what you believe in and is therefore a strong leader.

In the run-up to this election, my excitement has decreased compared to before. As an American Muslim, I’m proud to have my interests promoted, but sometimes I feel like it’s not the priority. Instead, I’m stuck in a harm reduction mindset: I vote for the candidate who I think will do the least harm, rather than the one who truly represents my values. Internationally, my concern is the safety of my brothers and sisters around the world. However, in the Middle East, I do not feel that either candidate’s program is 100% in line with my values. It is also difficult to feel safe at home. While I understand the importance of addressing social and economic issues, some of both candidates’ policies seem a bit disingenuous or require clarification on certain promises or claims they make.
