Affidavit reveals details behind home invasion arrest in Smith County

SMITH COUNTY, Texas (KLTV) – A man has been arrested for his involvement in a suspected aggravated home invasion at a mobile home park in Smith County.

Jason Thomas Stamps, 36, was arrested on charges of aggravated robbery and evading arrest with a vehicle.

According to the arrest warrant affidavit, on Sept. 12 at 11:48 p.m., a woman was in her bathroom when she heard someone kicking on her front door. She ran out and screamed at the men who entered her living room to get out. She told officers she knew some of the men. One of the men, Charles “Root” Ray Griffith Jr., held a gun to her head as they began removing items from her home, the affidavit said.

Another of the men, the affidavit says, was Stamps. He was seen removing a large television from the living room wall and then carrying it outside into the garden. She said they couldn’t fit the TV in her car, a small rented Audi, so they threw it on the ground and damaged it.

Some of the men also allegedly stole tools from the outside of the home and turned off their security camera. However, she secretly took camera video of the men pulling her television from the wall and was able to show it to the police.

The affidavit states that Stamps had an on-and-off relationship with the woman’s boyfriend, who had previously been at her home, which may have been why he became angry and participated in the home invasion.

The woman said that since the crime, numerous unnamed people have told her to “drop the charges or things could get worse.”

However, she and her partner decided to press charges.

Stamps was arrested for his involvement in the alleged crime on Oct. 4 and booked into the Smith County Jail on charges of aggravated robbery and evading arrest with a vehicle.
