Boston renames Bridge in honor of NBA legend Bill Russell

As NBC Sports Boston reports, the North Washington Street Bridge in Boston will be renamed in honor of Boston Celtics legend Bill Russell.

During his 13-year playing career, all of which came as a member of the Celtics, Russell won a total of 11 NBA championships and was named Most Valuable Player five times. He became the first Black head coach in league history and won two NBA championships in that role.

Reconstruction of the bridge, located about a block from TD Garden, is expected to be completed this spring. The renaming comes to honor Russell’s contributions on and off the basketball court, according to Boston Mayor Michelle Wu’s office.

“Renaming the bridge will honor his commitment to civil rights and the advancement of Boston’s youth and young athletes,” the mayor’s office said.

On Monday, Mayor Wu, Russell’s widow Jeannine Russell, current and former Celtics players and other officials will announce the renaming. The Celtics start the regular season on Tuesday against the New York Knicks.
