ATHENS, Ohio – It’s not hard to see how dedicated the graduate student is Marcel Walker Burgess (Piscataway, NJ). His commitment to being a devoted family member to his own blood and the Bobcats has helped him achieve great success so far in his first season.

Walker-Burgess began his college career at Southern Connecticut State University and later transferred to the University of Nevada to complete his undergraduate degree in communications and sports management. After graduating, he knew he wanted to play more soccer, but didn’t know where yet.

“I think it depends,” Walker-Burgess said. “What will you do for your dreams?” What sacrifices are you willing to make to ensure your dreams come true? I didn’t expect my career to take me across the country to Nevada, but it was good. “I met a lot of people, some good coaches and so on. I just make sure my dreams come true and these are the steps I will take to make sure that happens.

Although Walker-Burgess had previously lived across the country to pursue his football ambitions, he knew it was time to move closer to home. His deep bond with his family called him back to the West Coast.

He spoke with one of his former coaches at Nevada, who happened to know the defensive line coach Kurt Mattix. Now Walker-Burgess is getting a degree in digital media and tearing up the stage in Athens.

During his time away from football, Walker-Burgess does his best to see his family back home. Whenever he takes a long break in New Jersey, he enjoys spending time with his grandparents and the entire family. He always takes the opportunity to travel home because whenever he lived on the West Coast, it was difficult for him to take the opportunity to return to New Jersey.

“I’m a big family man,” Walker-Burgess said. “I would say my biggest inspiration is my grandparents. You are my rock. You sacrificed so much for me. My grandparents are not my actual biological grandparents, so if you look at my last name, my last name is Walker hyphenated Burgess. Their last.” My name is Burgess, so I felt like they deserved whatever needed to be done when they grew up and added their last name.

Walker-Burgess also said that Ohio’s entire defense is an inspiration to him. He said he enjoys being a part of the team, watching how hard everyone on the team works, even down to the coaches. He loves the team bond with the boys because it was something he didn’t do much of at his previous schools.

The opportunity to bond with the team gives him a sense of belonging away from his family.

Walker-Burgess embodies the spirit of perseverance and dedication, not only as an athlete pursuing his dreams, but also as a family-oriented individual who values his roots. His journey across the bars showcases his passion for football, while also showing an unwavering commitment to his grandparents, who are one of the greatest inspirations in his life.

As he continues to pursue his goals in football, Walker-Burgess reminds us that success is measured not only by what he achieves on the field, but also by the relationships he has built and the values he upholds along the way.
