My new Dyson headphones have given me something money can’t buy

As for me, I gave up on headphones a while ago because 1) they hurt my ears, 2) when the leather coating on the cups wore out, they looked like they were coming out of my ears and neck, and 3) I did too. I don’t want to look outdated when everyone around me has switched to AirPods. But with the launch of the Dyson OnTrac™ headphones last month, it felt like a change was on the horizon.

Jake Dyson, the brand’s chief engineer, told me that developing headphones as a fashion accessory was one of the most important parameters during the design process. The way he saw it, even DJs hanging headphones around their necks is a fashion statement. “We looked at the street culture and fashion of India and Japan, where people like to express themselves as individuals, but we also wanted to create pleasant colors and see how the combination of textures and colors work well together.” The copper-colored Dyson headphones, which I own now manage to attract enough attention and stand out from the dull and minimalist beige palette of my clothing. Sometimes it’s about attitude – the act of slowly unzipping your bag and pulling out a chunky, shiny, beautiful thing.
