Lifestyle Lookout: An art exhibit, live music, and a meet-and-greet with a local author

WHATCOM COUNTY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – It’s going to be a dreary weekend in Whatcom County, the perfect weather for theater, arts and great live music.

We’re quickly approaching the peak of spooky season. With that in mind, “The Land Has Spoken: Tales of Indigenous Horror” will be shown at the Mount Baker Theater on Friday, October 18th. Experience a night of curses and omens as the cast guides you through the vast canon of Native American horror stories.

“The Land Has Spoken” is a radio-style drama with an all-Indigenous cast, written and produced in addition to novelists Shane Hawk and Andrea Rogers and directors Kyla Tucaya Garcia and Andre Bouchard. If you love macabre stories about monsters, shapeshifters, and cunning con artists, this is the series for you. “The Land Has Spoken” plays Friday at 7:30 p.m. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit the Mount Baker Theater website.

If you’re more into true stories and local history, here’s something fascinating to check out. Local author Rustan Robertson will launch his new book, “The Wages of Sin: The True Story and Photos of the Great Sedro-Woolley Bank Robbery of 1914,” at Village Books in Fairhaven.

A group of bandits robbed the First National Bank of Sedro-Woolley of over $11,000 worth of gold and fled north through Whatcom County into British Columbia. The robbery sparked a manhunt that ended with…

Well, we won’t spoil it for you. To take a look at the photos and hear Robertson’s story firsthand, head to Fairhaven on Saturday, October 19th. The presentation begins at 3:00 p.m. Go to the Village Books website to reserve a spot.

If art is more your thing, you’re in luck too. Cordata Gallery presents “Color and Line: An Exploration of Three NW Artists.” It is an exhibition that features the work of local artists Renee Noelle Cheesman, Johannes Kunst and David Syre, three artists with a shared appreciation for color and line.

“Color and Line” runs through January 25th at Cordata Gallery (465 W Stuart Rd., Bellingham, WA). The gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m

Our live show this week is a must for post-punk and indie rock lovers. Hailing from Montreal, Cola will captivate the audience at Shakedown with rhythmic grooves, edgy guitar licks and introspective lyrics. Think Television, Joy Division and Sonic Youth.

Mind Shrine kicks off Cola with their psychedelic interpretation of dream pop. The show begins Friday, October 18th at 9 p.m. For tickets, visit shakedownbellingham.com.
