BYU fans blast Tribune columnist over Utah College Football Playoff guarantee

I don’t usually pay much attention to social media, and if or when I do, I laugh about it. But in this particular case, I couldn’t help but dial in, notice this, pay attention, love this, because I need this. Really. Perhaps. It means so much to me. And it is time for everyone who cared enough to attend to express their deep appreciation for this erudite, nuanced and instructive rectification. Feedback on different platforms and messages in other ways are so much… what’s that word? … relieving.

And I deserve every bit of it… well, most of it.

So I would like to personally thank the hundreds of BYU fans, as well as a few others around the Big 12, who I have heard from recently for pointing out the error of my predictions in a previous column, no , this column somehow guarantees that Utah would win the league that season and then qualify for the College Football Playoff.

The Utes’ back-to-back losses to Arizona schools appear to have sparked these reactions.

It has been brought to my attention that I may have been just a little bit wrong on this question, although we have seen instances in the past where the Utes stumbled early and found a way to fight back, face adversity and Am At the end of the day you have to beat it and win. But, I’m told, that was in the small Pac-12, not the rugged Big 12 where real football is played.

I’m not so sure this big Ute comeback will happen in 2024 anymore, but it has happened in other years when Kyle Whittingham discovered a way to solve his team’s problems on the run, like an Indy -Car that made a successful pit stop In the middle of a race, the crew fights, and then the car sees the checkered flag first.

It could happen again. It’s still possible. Maybe not the right bet, but possible.

“They’re sure to screw up a thing or two along the way,” I wrote in the predictions column mentioned above.

I also wrote, “Getting through is something Utah football has mastered.” The exception to this is a big part of what happened to the Utes last season when they were devastated by injury. They had disappeared with the curve. If that happened again this season, they would be gone again.”

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) Utah Utes quarterback Cameron Rising (7) as the Utah Utes host the Baylor Bears, NCAA Football, on Saturday, September 7, 2024, in Salt Lake City.

Healthy cam rising was key to this prediction. But a guarantee is a guarantee, the damaged fingers and knuckles be damned, and mine, as I was so fondly reminded, aren’t looking so good at the moment.

Either way, every now and then those of us who are hanging our butts out there need to hang over the edge and make our best guesses about what will become the present in the future…well, we need a stern correction. We are not – I am not – Nostra-damned-Damus. And that’s why I’m very grateful for the words and images shared by people who have taken the time to speak out on this issue and who have been simply remarkable in helping me and everyone else in their respective walks of life understand, that I was probably wrong.

Clown faces and memes of confused, gurgling mugs of various kinds were particularly effective for me. Thank you for that.

Messages like: “Note to self: This guy doesn’t know anything about football.”

And: “One more [emoji of a pile of human defecation] take some of that goober.”

And the image of a woman spitting out her coffee laughing, another image of a couple of comedians falling apart.

And: “You’re a joke.”

And, “Has this guy ever been right about anything?”

And: “As always, first-class reporting from GoMo. Done.”

And, “Damn, I’m glad you don’t give financial advice.”

And: “I hope you put a lot of money into this Gordo.”

And: “Giving this guy a platform is one of our biggest mistakes as a society.”

And, “Yes, Monson is wrong about literally everything.”

And: “Like I said, a fool.”

And: “About as good a guarantee as Gordo writing more lies about his church.”

And: “Gordon’s sporting and political views are equivalent.”

And: “That’s exactly the moment I knew it was over for Utah.”

And a meme of Dick Dastardly’s dog Muttley giggling.

And: “Yes, that attitude was almost as bad as the coaching job tonight against ASU.”

And Will Ferrell laughed and said, “What an idiot!”

And: “For $1,000,000 I will get bad results, Alex.”

And, “I hope you didn’t get a Utah 2024 Natty tattoo.”

And: “Thank you very much, Gordo! I blame you for this debacle of the season. Jerk!”

And: “Wassap scam.”

And a meme of a laughing monkey.

And: “A-plus analysis from Gordon as always.”

And: “I honestly feel bad for my friends from Utah right now, but I’m not at all sorry for attacking Brother Monson.”

And: “Gordon is stupid.”

And: “You’re a loser, just like the Utes.”

And: “You should go [expletive] yourself. You are a [expletive]. You [expletive] [expletive]. Come on, Cougs.”

Ahhh, actually. Isn’t that how we learn? A teaching moment. I feel expanded, enlightened, even encouraged. And I am grateful.

This is just a small selection. There were additional clarifications, explanations and instructions. All I can say to you all is an extremely humble… Thank you. Yes, thank you and bless you all.
