More than 200,000 Tennesseans cast their ballots on the first day of early voting for the second consecutive presidential election.

Wednesday’s totals surpass 2016, but not 2020.

The Tennessee Secretary of State’s Office reported that 216,446 people voted in person or by absentee ballot on Wednesday, October 16, the first day of in-person voting in the 2024 presidential election in the state.

In 2020, 264,671 people voted on the first day of early voting, compared to 143,141 in 2016.

Early voting in Tennessee runs through October 31st. Election day is November 5th.

Early voting and absentee voting remain popular in Tennessee two-thirds the almost 3 million votes cast in 2020 before Election Day.

Still, Tennessee consistently ranks among the lowest in voter turnout and ranked last in the 2022 midterm elections Massachusetts Institute of Technology Electoral Performance Index.

In addition to the U.S. presidential campaign, Tennesseans will participate in one U.S. Senate race and nine congressional elections this year. All 99 state House seats are up for vote – 66 of which are contested – as well as 16 state Senate races, 13 of which are contested.
