High school

Last night at high school volleyball…

  • Calumet defeated Westwood 3-0 (25-9, 25-10, 25-10). Allie Bjorn had six kills and six aces; Maddie Torola 13 kills and three aces; Millie Loukus and Bella Coppo each had 11 assists; and Sienna Anderson three aces.
  • Hancock stopped Ishpeming 3-0 (25-18, 25-12, 25-22) on Senior Night.
  • Lake Linden-Hubbell defeated Baraga 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 27-25). For the Lakes, Cleo Milkey had 14 kills, three aces and seven digs; Emily Burnham five kills and three blocks; and Ashlyn Steve’s 12 Digs.
  • Dollar Bay-Tamarack City celebrated Parents Night with its sixth straight win, 3-0 (25-16, 25-9, 25-20) over L’Anse. For the Blue Bolts, Sophie Berryman had seven service points, two kills and two digs; Kiera Isaacson four aces, 12 kills and 13 digs; Laila Bell nine service points and five digs; Evelyn Moilanen four aces, 10 service points, three kills and eight digs; Kelsey Jaehnig four kills; and Macy Jurgensen six aces, 15 service points, 20 assists and 10 digs.
  • Jeffers defeated Bessemer 3-0 (25-7, 25-20, 25-9). Kloe Verran had four aces; Taylor Heinonen five aces, seven digs, two kills and 10 assists; Liz Halonen 11 assists; and Mia Nordstrom eight kills.
  • Chassell lost to Ironwood 3-0 (25-9, 25-13, 25-11). Elli Kuntze had eight assists for the Panthers; Oriana Olson six kills; and Paige Danison four kills, two aces and a block.
  • Ewen-Trout Creek defeated Watersmeet 3-0.

Tomorrow’s volleyball schedule in Calumet features a 1-2-3-4 division square. Marquette will represent Division One; Kingsford Division Two; the Copper Kings Division Three; and Forest Park Division Four. The competitions start tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m., there are two gyms in use. The public is welcome.

Tonight in high school football…

The UP Cross Country finals will be played tomorrow at Pictured Rocks Golf Course in Munising.

The MTU football team plays at Ferris State tomorrow afternoon.

The Northern Hockey team hosts Alaska tonight and tomorrow.

College football

The Michigan Tech football team plays at Davenport University this afternoon at 2:00 p.m.

The Northern women’s team plays at Ferris State this afternoon.

The Northern men’s team hosts Saginaw Valley State today.

College volleyball

The MTU and NMU volleyball teams will play in the GLIAC/GLVC crossover event this weekend….

  • The Huskies will open this afternoon against Quincy and tonight against Tiffin.
  • The Wildcats face Findlay this afternoon and Indianapolis tonight.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers and Calumet Wolverines open their season tomorrow night with an early game against each other. The faceoff will take place at 6:00 p.m. in the Colosseum.

NHL

The Red Wings’ slow start to the season continued last night with a 5-2 loss to the Rangers. Moritz Seider and JT Compher scored for Detroit. Cam Talbot allowed five goals on 19 shots and was replaced by Alex Lyon midway through the game.

The Wings visit the Predators tomorrow. Coverage begins at 1:45 a.m. on 99.3 The Lift.

N.B.A

The Pistons open the regular season on Wednesday at home against the Pacers. Coverage begins at 6:35 a.m. on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Guardians defeated the Yankees 7-5 in 10 innings. Jhonkensy Noel’s two-out home run in the bottom of the ninth tied the game, and David Fry’s two-run shot in the bottom of the tenth was the game winner. New York leads the American League Championship Series 2-1 with Game 4 taking place tonight in Cleveland.

In the National League Championship Series, the Dodgers defeated the Mets 10-2. LA leads this series 3-1 and could advance to the World Series with a win tonight in New York.

NFL

In last night’s NFL contest, the Broncos defeated the Saints 33-13. Javonte Williams ran for two touchdowns.

The Lions visit the undefeated Vikings in a 1:00 game Sunday on 99.3 The Lift.

The Packers host the Texans in a 1:00 contest.
