Dominion Energy aims to develop 21 GW of carbon-free capacity by 2039 (USA)

The US energy company Dominion Energy has published its Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) for 2024 and presented it to the local authorities in the US states of Virginia and North Carolina. This specifies several portfolio options to cover increasing electricity demand.

According to the plan, Dominion Energy plans to bring approximately 21 GW of new clean energy capacity online over the next 15 years, including approximately 12 GW of new solar capacity, 4.5 GW of new battery storage and 3.4 GW of new offshore wind (in addition) . The capacity is to be increased to 2.6 GW by 2039. The plan also calls for the development of five small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) with a total capacity of 1,340 MW, to be developed in the mid-2030s.

To meet increasing supply demand, Dominion plans to continue to rely on gas-fired assets, which are expected to provide about 20% of Dominion’s generation, while its SMRs and long-duration energy storage (LDES) are developed and are planned to provide 5.9 GW ans Grid to bring gas generation between 2030 and 2036.
