Jersey State Police said the new law was a “pre-emptive step”.

A new law has been introduced in Jersey making it illegal to carry weapons without good reason in public or on school grounds.

Previously, it was not illegal to carry an object with a blade or sharp point on school property, and prosecutors had to prove intent to cause harm in public facilities.

Sergeant David Bowler said: “The new law is a precautionary step to ensure the safety of our young people and the wider community.”

“I also encourage parents to include young people in conversations on this topic.”

The force said it would work closely with the Jersey Youth Service and schools, using the support of the Building A Safer Community (BASC) framework.

The aim is to connect with young people, raise awareness and dispel misunderstandings around carrying weapons.
