Mathis runs through West Oso for victory at Game Night South Texas

MATHIS, Texas – The Mathis Pirates (4-3, 1-3) picked up a decisive district win at home against West Oso (0-7, 0-4) on KRIS 6 News’ Game Night South Texas.

The 65-0 win is the first for Mathis in District 15 of 3A-DI.

It was mostly positive for Mathis from the start, but all bad news for the Bears.

After a West Oso punt, Mathis drove in for his first score. It took a fourth down and a seven pickup from Jody Rios to keep the drive alive. Abram Cuellar finished the drive with a 14-yard run. He had three touchdowns that night.

If West Oso showed any positivity, it was from their two quarterbacks, Ryan Guerrero and Julio Acosta. They showed off their athleticism all night long and tried to avoid a troublesome Mathis defensive line.

On the Bears’ second drive, Guerrero spun in circles for seven or eight seconds before getting a throw toward his sideline. It was plucked from the air by Duke Bernal the Pirates.

That prepared the freshman quarterback to deliver for the Pirates. From 15 yards out, Rojelio Montemayor followed the blockers before running over two defenders to get into the end zone. Mathis made it 15-0.

Mathis’ defense also tirelessly forced a punt in the second half. On the very next play, Aaron Acosta took the field to Montemayor’s left. The quarterback became the lead blocker as Acosta ran down the sideline for a 60-yard score. He had two touchdowns that night. The two-point attempt failed and the score was 21-0.

The next Mathis ride had the longest pass of the day. Montemayor dropped a dime up the middle to Brandon Reed, giving him a 37-yard gain.

The Pirates reached the goal line, but a poor exchange cost them the ball, which fell into the arms of the Bears’ C’Angelo Richardson.

The Bears couldn’t move the ball and actually had a bad punt that went out around the 12-yard line, allowing Mathis to go back to work. Jagger Veliz shot the ball for a 28-0 lead.

Montemayor capped the half with his second rushing touchdown, he had three in the game. At halftime, the Pirates led 34-0.

The Bears’ best chance to score came in the third quarter. Julio Acosta had success by calling his own number and getting the Bears to the Mathis three-yard line.

On first down, they attempt a pass to the right that was placed perfectly over the defenders and into the hands of Noah Ramirez, but it was dropped. In the second half, Julio Acosta was caught off guard by an early snap and tried unsuccessfully to simply run into the end zone.

On third down, Mathis blitzed as the Bears tried to use the option to the left. The ball landed on the field and was caught by Darion Villarreal of the Pirates. It looked like he was going to score from over 90 yards out, but a blocking penalty negated the goal. The Pirates took over at the West Oso 45-yard line.

In a district that has two state-ranked teams in Edna and Goliad, Mathis is still capable of advancing to the playoffs. They have already played against three of the top four teams in the district.

Unfortunately, West Oso still has all of these matchups to come.

Mathis heads to Palacios (2-4, 1-2) on Friday, October 25th.

West Oso hosts London (3-3, 2-1) on the same night.
