PGA Shriners Children’s Open: Taylor Pendrith leads after 1st round | Shriners open | sport

Taylor Pendrith came to his final hole at the Shriners Children’s Open on Thursday needing an eagle to shoot 59.

When his second shot landed in a greenside bunker, Pendrith’s next thought was to be aggressive.

“My caddy and I didn’t really talk about it, but I think we both knew I was going to try to hole the bunker shot,” he said.

Pendrith’s ball traveled 13 feet past the hole. He missed the comebacker and settled for a 10-under 61 and a three-shot lead after the first round at TPC Summerlin.

Former UNLV golfers Harry Hall and Garrick Higgo were among 10 players tied at 7-under 64. This group also includes Las Vegas residents Doug Ghim, Rico Hoey and Joseph Bramlett.

Conditions are expected to be more difficult for Friday’s second round. Temperatures are forecast to be in the 60s and wind gusts well over 30 mph are expected.

“I feel like we had the same distance a few times and were able to hit some tight wedges and make a lot of putts inside 10 feet,” Pendrith said. “Everything was on. I would have liked to have birdied or made eagle on the last (hole), but I’m still very, very happy.”

Pendrith made his first start since the Presidents Cup in late September and tied his career low on the PGA Tour. He also shot a 61 at the 2021 Bermuda Championship.

He had five birdies on each side, including three in a row starting on No. 11, which was his second hole of the day. The Canadian only missed one fairway and one green in regular playing time.

Pendrith, who tied for third at last year’s Shriners Children’s Open, was just one stroke shy of the course record of 60 strokes last set by Rod Pampling in 2017.

“I have a good vibe out here and really like the golf course and facility,” Pendrith said. “Conditions are going to be difficult over the next day and a half, so I’ll just have to tough it out and hopefully just hang in there and see what happens.”

Hall was one of several players with local ties who topped the leaderboard. He took advantage of the calm conditions during the morning wave and finished at 3-under 33.

After a bogey on No. 6, his 15th hole, Hall rebounded with three straight birdies – he nearly got an eagle on No. 8 – and finished with a 64.

“I don’t expect to make birdie (No. 8) every time I play it, but I hit a great 7-wood shot there from a foot away, which was the best shot of the day.” said Hall. “Today I just tried not to put pressure on myself and just hit every shot as best as I could.”

Ghim had nine birdies and two bogeys during his round of 64. This included three straight birdies on numbers 15, 16 and 17. Higgo, who was eliminated in the afternoon wave when conditions were much tougher, birdied his final hole and shot a 64.

Former UNLV star Ryan Moore shot a 65, as did former Bonanza golfer Scott Piercy. Former UNLV golfers Charley Hoffman and Kurt Kitayama were there with 66s.

Two-time defending champion Tom Kim made an error on three of his first five holes but recovered to shoot 2-under 69.

Joel Dahmen was penalized four shots for having more than 14 sticks in his basket. Dahman, who shot a 76, called it “bizarro” and said he discovered on the fourth tee that he had an extra 4-iron with him.

“If you play golf long enough, strange things will happen out here,” Dahmen said. “You just want to get angry so much and you want to get angry at everything. But at the same time, you just have to keep playing golf, and I didn’t do that very well after that.”
