New eye-scanning sphere from Sam Altman’s World revealed

All right, everyone welcome. We know a lot of people flew in. So it’s a really big deal for us that you’re here. This is a big day for us. Um, we started working on this about five years ago, and back then we really believed that something like this should exist in an AI future that we all want to live in. And that’s why we don’t just think that what we do is crucial. We also think it’s very, very timely and that’s why one of the main themes today is scale and how we can make all the products and services that we’ve developed available to many more people in the next few years. But before we talk about the additional products, we wanted to talk a little bit about why we’re even here, why did we start this? And what is important to us? And with that, Sam, why haven’t you talked about it a little bit? Nice to see you all. So we started this a long time ago with the belief that what seemed very unusual at the time was that AI progress was going to happen very quickly. And we thought that if AI was going to happen, if AI was going to fulfill the dream, then we still had a long way to go, but we’ve made great progress since then. It would be the most powerful tool humans had yet created. It would change the economy, it would change society in many ways. And what we hoped most for AI and the things we wanted to build around AI is that AI would really accelerate humans. This idea that AI was a tool that people would use, not a standalone entity, and that people would be able to do things in the world that they simply couldn’t have done before. And we started thinking about the infrastructure that society would need. If AI really gets going, you know, what will it take to achieve this great outcome for the world? We could imagine a world back then and beyond, where there are many AI tools that allow people to do far more than they have ever been able to before. Many AI agents get things done. And we were sure that the world would need a new, new level of infrastructure to make this happen, and they wanted to have the ability to verify humanity. You wanted to know who people were, you wanted to be able to provide a great infrastructure for people and agents to send resources back and forth, do all sorts of things, and communicate with each other. And we thought if there was a way to build a new network, maybe that would be a big step forward. And so we came up with a simple plan that hasn’t changed much since then. And I don’t think much will change in the future, and there were four big steps. That’s it. The first was about creating a proof of a human system that could be used worldwide. It is completely anonymous. Second, use this infrastructure to launch a digital token, ultimately giving ownership of it to every human being, and use this to grow the network to critical size. Third, the network will then be further scaled and decentralized to eventually be used to bring the benefits of AI to everyone, among many other great things we hope this network will do. And so we did one thing, we developed World I, which we believe is proof of humanity at internet scale. We launched a token last July, which brought us to step number two. And so we are currently at three. And that means a big, big focus of our work is on continually scaling and decentralizing the network. Currently, someone logs into the network every two seconds. We have a total of 15 million users, 7 million of which are verified with a bullet. And another thing that we really care about is the density of the network because we believe it’s useful for developers and us to build products that are actually important and useful to people. We are now at one in seven in Santiago and Lisbon, just two examples and even one in three adults in Buenos Aires, Argentina, who are verified. While that’s exciting and kind of something to be proud of, of course that’s just the beginning, just like the very early beginning of what we’re trying to do because the mission here is to really bring the ministry to every person. And the first step of the plan was about demonstrating humanity. And five years ago it sounded like an abstract thing because Ellen Turing didn’t actually work. They just break for one reason or another. You might think about using phone cameras, you might think about maybe using government IDS, maybe facial recognition, none of that actually works. And because we truly care about this issue and believe it is critical to achieving our ultimate mission. We took it very seriously and came to the extremely painful realization very early in the project that we would probably need to distribute physical hardware around the world. And not only that we have to open it. So many other companies, many other parties can join us in building these devices and probably like many different forms, probably integrated into hardware devices that already exist or that we already use. But that’s very likely what needs to happen because the current infrastructure, the current systems that are out there just don’t work for this particular problem. And that’s why we built the Sphere, which provides both a secure and anonymous way to solve evidence for human problems on a global scale. And today we’re going to talk about the next generation of Orbs, which we’ve been working hard on for a while and I’m really excited about. So here it is, here is the new orb. Aside from being incredibly beautiful, it was designed from the ground up to scale. The entire software stack has been completely rewritten for all spheres to enable checks three times faster than before. The new ORB was developed with 30% fewer parts and allows us to assemble twice as quickly. First, we are tripling the ball’s production capacity and plan to increase it even further with new assembly partners and locations around the world. We are making progress toward the ultimate goal of decentralized Orb manufacturing. The latest ORB is built with NVIDIA Jetson architecture, which delivers five times higher AI performance compared to the previous generation. It is capable of 100 trillion operations per second. This allows the new sphere to run sophisticated AI models that demonstrate humanity and function fully on the device, even faster than before the new sphere was built, with more transparency and the ability to inspect the code running on it. It has a fully removable SD card that contains all instruction manuals. So anyone can compare these instructions on the SD card with our published source code. But to provide access to every human, we need more orbs, many more orbs, probably on the order of 1000 times more orbs than we have today. Not just more herbs, but also more bullets in more places. And I want to talk about a few options. That’s what we’re going to achieve today. Firstly, we will expand our activities in even more countries than before. I’m excited to share the flagship locations with you today. Plus, these are premium verification experiences. We have employees there who are available to answer any questions. Just a few weeks ago we opened our first two flagship locations in Buenos Aires and Mexico City. This is our Mexico City location that opened just a few weeks ago. I think they look really great. Next, we’re expanding access to bullets through self-service checks. Think of these as spheres in existing retail locations. Your convenience store or local coffee shop, like the one you see behind me, allows people to discover the project by either seeing a bullet in a retail setting or specifically going into that retail store to check it out with a bullet. These partnerships are key to scaling Orb locations and increasing distribution across a region. They give access to even more people than we do today. And if you don’t want to go looking for a bullet, that’s okay. That’s why, starting today, we’re announcing a new feature called Orb on Demand. This allows anyone to request a scoop to come to them with the push of a button, similar to a pizza you would have delivered to your apartment. You can press a button, it will appear at your door, and the driver will then leave the food behind. And I’m incredibly excited to announce a brand new partnership with Rappy, the number one delivery service in Latin America. They integrate with our app and dispatch their existing delivery fleet to deliver bullets to anyone who wants to get verified, whenever they want. And finally I would like to talk about a new type of operator. We start today as community operators. This means anyone can rent or buy the new sphere to verify everyone in their community. We will set up a website. You can place your pre-order and it will be delivered to you from spring 2025. In fact, I want you all to be our first community operators today. Everyone here gets a bullet
