The Bronx Music Hall opens this weekend in Melrose

News 12 got a first look at the opening of a new venue in Melrose this weekend that organizers say will preserve our district’s sometimes-forgotten heritage.

The new Bronx Music Hall features a 250-person theater, dance studio, recording studio and post-production space, as well as an outdoor amphitheater.

Created by nonprofit WHEDco, the hall aims to highlight that the District’s musical influence extends far beyond hip-hop, as it was once the epicenter of doo-wop, R&B, Latin jazz and salsa in NYC.

WHEDco leaders say there will be free and low-cost programs throughout the year, including classes and performances for all ages, to ensure the Melrose community is at the heart of the work.

BMHC artistic directors Elena Martínez and multi-Grammy-nominated percussionist Bobby Sanabria will curate the program at the Bronx Music Hall.

The grand opening weekend begins Friday, October 18th with a panel discussion at 5:30 p.m. and musical performances starting at 8 p.m. from Bronx hip-hop legends Grandmaster Caz and MC Sha-Rock, the Bronx DJ- Collective Uptown Vinyl Supreme and The Afro-Haitian roots music band Congo.
