San Rafael excels in assists in Dominican victories

Former San Rafael High star Norman Tellez recorded his first assist of the season as the Dominican University men’s soccer team earned a 4-0 win over Academy of Art on Thursday.

Tellez, a sophomore who started all 12 games for the Penguins (6-5-1, 3-3-0 PacWest), set up Thomas Van Schoor’s fourth goal in the 64th minute. Van Schoor also scored the third goal in the 61st minute.

Anthony Stainer scored in the first minute and assisted on two goals for the Penguins.

Women’s football

Jackie Lancaster, a former San Rafael High standout, assisted on the game’s first goal as the Dominicans secured a 2-1 win over the Academy of Art on Thursday.

Lancaster, who has one goal and two assists in four starts this season, passed to Ysabella Belandres in the 10th minute to give the Penguins (5-6-1, 2-4-0) a 1-0 lead. Academy of Art tied the game in the 23rd minute, but Megan Clapinski scored the late winner for the Penguins in the 89th minute.

Girls tennis

Mirabel Arlander and Katie Warrin picked up wins at the first two singles spots to help Branson to a 5-2 win over Marin Catholic on Thursday. The Bulls won the singles matches and also got wins from Audrey Gilmor and Simone Schacter.

Girls volleyball

Muriel Harris and Alegra Huck combined for 15 kills and six blocks as Marin Academy won its fourth straight, 28-26, 25-15, 25-17, over Lick-Wilmerding on Wednesday night. The Wildcats (16-10, 6-3 BCL West) also got 20 assists, 10 digs, five kills and two aces from Ellie Yasuda.

  • The MCAL playoffs are all but certain after Wednesday’s action. Branson secured first place with a win against San Rafael, while Marin Catholic secured second place with a win against Terra Linda. Both teams secured byes in the first round and hosted the semifinals on Wednesday evening. Redwood and Tam are seeded third and fourth, respectively, and host first-round games on Tuesday. Terra Linda will likely play Tam and San Marin will likely play Redwood.

Water polo for boys

Ryan Coleman scored a game-high eight goals as Tam (10-6, 4-3) secured a 15-11 win over San Domenico on Thursday.

Girls golf

Marin Academy fell to St. Joseph Notre Dame by a single stroke, 200-201, at Peacock Gap on Friday. Sterling Colpitts and Kelly Lundgren led the Wildcats (11-3) with 49ers and senior Genevieve Zeches shot a 50.

MA finished second in the league behind St. Joseph Notre Dame. The league tournament is scheduled to be played Monday at Peacock Gap.
