Cowgirls open ITA Regional with solid play

LAS CRUCES, NM (Oct. 17, 2024) – It was a rain-shortened first day, but a productive first day for the Wyoming Cowgirls on the first day of the ITA Mountain Regional Thursday hosted by New Mexico State. The Cowgirls took a 3-0 lead in doubles that day and picked up three qualifying victories in singles to start the regional.

The day started with the team from Anastasiia Kochelaevskaia And Elena Trencheva Victory over Colorado State 8-5. Eugenia Ceinos And Ruby Young also earned an 8-5 victory, defeating a team from Montana. The opening round was rounded off by victories in doubles Violetta Borodina And Dilnaz Mashabayeva defeated Idaho by a score of 8-6.

In singles, Wyoming picked up three victories in qualifying in the round of 64. Kochelaevskaia opened with a straight-sets win over BYU’s Bitsy Tullis, 6-2, 6-4. Kochelaevskaia led Ida Johansson of Idaho 6-3, 4-1 in the next round before play was canceled due to rain.

Trencheva and Young also earned opening-round wins in straight sets on Thursday. Trencheva defeated Hiba Heni of BYU 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). Young, meanwhile, earned a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Weber State’s Alicia Morales.

The second day begins with the conclusion of the qualifying rounds before the main draw begins. Borodina is still waiting for her first opponent in the main draw. The round of the last 32 in doubles will also take place on Friday.
